The Shoeman is at it again.
This time Shoeman Water Projects, based in Fenton,Save on asics shoes and apparel at the world's largest running store. has set a Guinness world record for the longest continuous chain of laced-up shoes. On May 7, George "Shoeman" Hutchings and a crew of volunteers laid out 24,962 pairs of shoes in an artistic display on Stankowski Athletic Field at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Mizzou alumnus Karl Johnson came up with the idea to attempt the record for the chain of shoes last September, according to a news release. The inspiration was the Shoeman Water Projects, a not-for-profit program that brings fresh drinking water to places around the globe where clean water and shoes are not affordable or accessible.
Johnson made appeals throughout Columbia to not only collect shoes but help organize and carry out the one-day event. Fraternity brothers, Girl Scouts, a children's volunteer service club and others worked all day to sort the shoes and take on the task of lining up the pairs of shoes heel to toe.
