Celebrities have more to teach us than what type of shoes to wear…

8. června 2011 v 3:29

Way back in the '60s, artist Andy Warhol predicted "In the future, everybody will be world-famous for 15 minutes." In this age of reality shows, YouTube videos and social media, it often seems that his prediction has come true.

As a therapist, I've worked with numerous celebrities on a professional basis. On a personal level, I'm acquainted with quite a few people at various stages of fame and even consider a few of them close friends. Over and over, I've watched as people in the spotlight stumble and sometimes even fall. All one has to do is turn on the television, go online or scan the newspaper headlines to learn every detail of the latest celebrity drama.

Many of us enjoy following the lives of high-profile individuals. We can stay on top of the latest trends, adidas Originals is a respected name in ladies tees and rompers follow their choices in restaurants and travel spots and even keep up with the latest cultural catchphrase - Charlie Sheen's "winning" being the latest perfect example of that phenomenon. No special equipment or hookups will be needed. However, the service will only work for customers who have both their cable forest hills trainers through Cablevision.

In our increasingly celebrity-driven culture, a huge number of people are, to one degree or another, influenced by celebrities - and there's nothing wrong with that… to an extent. That said, there are some universal cautionary lessons we can learn from watching those in the public eye - no matter what shoes we buy or what restaurants we go to:

* Realize that we are living in a new era where there's no such thing as anonymity - and privacy is no longer a given. In fact, it's just the opposite. The gossipy celeb magazines and tabloids work harder than ever to root out and disseminate every last bit of dishy information about celebrities and politicians; but the rest of us so-called private citizens regularly broadcast tidbits of our personal lives without a moment's thought. We take quizzes and join groups on social media sites letting the world know everything - from the fact that we watch The Biggest Loser to the name of our high school to the fact that we are up all hours playing games like Farkle or Farmville. Some of us more carefree (or: oblivious) folks post away on social networking sites, letting the world know whose kid we don't like and who we're flirting with (whether we're in a relationship or not). Oh, and if you thought it was all gone forever once you hit that "delete" button… check again. It's not. Read the fine print on those sites for details; what you think is gone forever still exists in cyberspace.

* Social media technology - i.e. Myspace, Facebook, Twitter and numerous other sites - have made it very easy to connect friends, promote a business or event and even just keep people informed about our lives. I'm on Twitter and Facebook, and I appreciate the benefits of meeting new people, learning new things and having the ability to let those who are interested know what I am up to. However, be on guard about "oversharing." Privacy disappears the moment anyone other than you knows your plans. When acquaintances know too many details of your personal life, they are free to use that knowledge however they like - and it might be in a way that negatively impacts you or your family. Be wary.
