Worth It? A Watch for Runners

1. června 2011 v 4:11

For $199, the Nike Plus Sportswatch GPS is a smart watch that tells you how far you've gone, how fast and how often. The watch, which is powered by navigation company TomTom, also knows where you've been. It tells you how many calories you've burned and reminds you to run if you haven't been running in a few days. Some will stick with the old faithfuls like the air max tn while others will look for the more stylish shoes like the Changa or the Tataga Wonderfully, it also tells time.

And it tells time in a big way - literally. The broad watch face displays the time in large block numbers that stack on top of each other. I wore the watch as a regular watch for several days and many people told me they checked the time over my shoulder because even they could see the numbers from afar. A simple tap on the face of the watch lights up the numbers.

The user interface on the watch is very clean and straight-forward. There are three easy-to-push buttons on the left-hand side of the watch (this is particularly nice if you're toggling through screens while running). A click of the button brings up four options - clock,Sheepskin shoes has managed to capture or become the pioneer into every imaginable sporting industry run, history and records. History records up to 13 hours of runs and you can look back to review time, pace, distance and calories. Records show your personal bests in these categories.

The run category is where you connect the watch and built-in GPS to satellites and also a Nike sensor, which comes with the watch. The sensor means you can get data even if you aren't in reach of a GPS satellite.

All of Nike's shoes come with a sensor pocket in the sole of the shoes that is easily found by lifting out the shoe-pad insert. Nike says that the sensor is designed to work properly when it fits snugly inside its little pocket area. What if you don't have Nike shoes? I tried running with the sensor in my hand and what would have been a three mile run clocked in as 1.16.

The watch does not measure altitude or monitor your heart rate, unless you have the Polar Wearlink Plus Heart Rate Transmitter - the only heart rate monitor it is compatible with.

We're all into data and sharing these days, and the watch doesn't disappoint. Using the USB connection that's built into the wristband, the watch uploads data to the Nike Plus site through Nike+ Connect software that you can download. In the Connect software you can change the preferences to reflect the data you want to see on the watch.

Once the data is uploaded to the site, you can view your runs and set goals, establish coaching plans, set challenges for yourself and talk with other runners in forums. You can set up a profile and connect to share your activity on Facebook and Twitter. This part was overkill for me, though, since I find it boring to talk about exercise.
